In the immediate aftermath of the 2nd world war in 1948, Armed Forces Medical College was set up primarily to provide specialists and super specialists to the armed forces in India by giving them proper training. Armed Forces Medical college or AFMC, as it is popularly known, is situated at the historic city of Pune and over the last 50 years of its existence it has grown to become one of the premier institutes providing medical education in India. The Armed Forces Medical College is fully residential college with separate hostels for both boys and girls. Residing in the hostels is compulsory for the cadets.The expense of the students is close to nil at AFMC as government of India provides free tuition, free lodging facilities, uniforms book subsidies and a allowance for upkeep of the uniforms. Students can also avail the canteen facilities for the defence personnel. Students in AFMC can engage in various recreational activities, as it is equipped with a swimming pool and separate courts for tennis, squash and basketball.The AFMC library is quipped with most modern facilities. It has 18000 books and subscribes to more than 270 national and international journals. All these along with the dedicated faculty make up the healthy environment of AFMC. Application Procedure : Application forms of the written test can be procured on payment of requisite charges from the specified General/Head/Central/Main Post offices and it can also be obtained from the officers in charge (Admission Cell), Armed Forces Medical College, Pune 411040 on payment of prescribed charges through Bank Draft on any nationalized bank in favor of the Commandant, AFMC, Pune along with full postal address of the candidate on two separate slips of paper.
Eligibility criteria for getting admission to AFMC Medical Entrance Test: Candidates should pass the10+2 Std./Pre-professional/Pre-medical exam or its equivalent examination of statutory Indian University/Board or any other recognized Board/University as a regular student in the first attempt with subjects of PCB and English securing not less than 60% of aggregate marks in the 3 Science subjects taken together, with 50% marks in each of the Science subjects, and not less than 50% marks in English. The candidates must have also passed an examination in Maths at least of the Matric Std. and passed B.Sc Exam. of an Indian University with not less than two of the subjects PCB (Botany, Zoology). Candidates who are to appear in the qualifying examination before May can also appear provisionally. Some other criteria for getting admission to AFMC Pune are -
The potential candidate should be a citizen of India. He or she can also be a subject of Nepal or Bhutan. A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan or any other foreign country with the intention of settling in India permanently can also sit for the exam.
The candidate should be unmarried. Marrying during the course is also not permitted.
The candidate should be medically fit as per the prescribed standards of the Govt. of India, Ministry of Defence.
The potential candidate must have attained at least 17yrs of age but must not have attained 22 yrs on 31st Dec of the year of application. The age limit for candidates who have passed or are appearing in final B Sc examinations should not be more than 24 years.
