There are a million ways to improve spoken English, or so people promise! The internet and book stores are full of information that promises to improve English, but the one most important aspect that is generally overlooked is that students and people new to the English language need tips that are very simple, yet effective.

For a person who is still gripping the words and its meaning, reading a newspaper won’t be of any help. After all, how will reading a newspaper, without even anyone guiding you, be of any help in improving English? Yet, this is one of the most common tips that is given to English learners.

The most important thing to consider when trying to improve English is to focus on the key problem. What is the one skill that comes between you and speaking fluent English? Lack of vocabulary, slow thought process, or lack of confidence? Once you have identified the problem, you can focus on correcting, instead of beating around the bush.

Here are a few, very basic ways to improve spoken English:

·    Write down and practice: Do you have to make a short speech or give a presentation at the office. For a person not used to speaking English, this is enough to give the jitters! However, calm down and take a pen and paper. Writing down your speech/ presentation will help you develop a flow and structure to your ideas. Also, writing down will give you the space to think and develop our speech. This is a great way of improving spoken English as it gives you a soft idea of how your speech starts, develops, and ends.

·  Record and listen for errors: Many people have difficulty pronouncing words like ‘tortoise’ ‘Mississippi’, etc. While in the flow of speech, you may not realize that you have mispronounced or skipped a word, but to the listener, this is very apparent. The best way to avoid such mistakes is to record your speech and listen to it closely. This way, you can not only overcome mistakes but also get ideas to improve your pronunciation.

·   Ask your friends for feedback: Do some of your friends speak impeccable English? Then what are you waiting for, ask for help and learn from them the ways to improve spoken English! Say your speech in front of your friends and ask them for feedback. This is the best tip for improving English, as you will get firsthand audience reaction.
